Please help! Hi everyone, my name is Patti and my husband is Mike, and well, welcome to our nightmare. It began last year when my husband sustained a head injury in a fall. He ended up retiring early from CBP because his loss of short-term memory, migraines, and new personality “quirks” made him feel that this was the best decision for his and the public’s safety. A couple of months later, I was diagnosed with sepsis related to a flesh-eating bacteria in my foot that resulted in 3 surgeries, high-dose antibiotics, amputation, and months-long walking restrictions. I was forced to quit my job as an RN due to the many restrictions and setbacks. In 10 months, we have lost everything and lost 2 very loved careers that we were good at. We have lost our house, our animals, vehicles, insurance, and savings just trying to stay afloat. On top of that, my brother died in the middle of all this. Unfortunately, our boat has sunk at this point. Because of the high-dose antibiotics, I have sustained kidney damage leading to uncontrolled high blood pressure, hair loss, and major dental issues, as well as a return of my foot issues while my husband’s mental health has deteriorated greatly. We both are at the deepest and darkest depths of depression, despair, and hopelessness. Without insurance, we can’t afford the medications nor the professional treatment that we need to get back to being productive, working, contributing citizens like we have always been. It is so hard and humbling to have to ask for help, especially when we have spent our lives dedicating our lives to helping others. We are working hard to get back to that, but we need help for right now. If you can find it in your heart to help us through this awful time that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy, I promise the kindness will be paid forward as we gain some semblance of a life back.
